Biography

Sir Michael Warton was educated at Cheam Grammar School, St John's College, Cambridge and Gray's Inn.
He was first elected to Parliament as member for Boroughbridge in 1675. Note: Boroughbridge is a town and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is 16 miles north-west of the county town of York.(https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Boroughbridge). Shaftesbury named him thrice worthy an indication that he was opposed to the accession of James II. This action cost Sir Michael his seat in Parliament in 1679. He was, however, elected as a member of Hull later that year.
During the revolution, he helped in securing Hull for William of Orange and secured his father's seat at Beverley in 1689. He was active in local affairs and contributed some £6000 to local charities.
He was knighted on 30 Jun1666, at the young age of eighteen.

Birth and Family

Sir Michael Warton (Wharton) was born about 1648, the eldest son of Michael Warton MP and Susan Poulett.

Death

Michael died unmarried on 25 March 1725 and was buried in Beverley Minster.
According to Poulson (1840), his three sisters Dame Mary Pennyman, Elizabeth Pelham, and Susanna were his heirs at law.[1] Sedgwick (1970), asserts that Susanna's son, Michael Newton, was also an heir.

Will

Dated 06 Apr 1724.[1]

It seems likely that Sir Michaels's vast fortune was entailed. This meant that any increase during his lifetime could be disposed of as he saw fit, but the basic fortune, and especially landholdings, had to go to the eldest son, or in his absence to all daughters equally, or in their absence to the eldest brother or his descendants, or if there were no such persons then to the sisters equally which was in fact the case. The entailed fortune would then pass to their descendants, under the same rules, or in the absence of such descendants pass to her sister(s) and their descendants.

So Sir Michael could propose which third went to which sister, but could not destroy the entail.
