Vernon was born about 1819. He was the son of Othey Wheat and Lucy Stapp. He passed away in 1864.

• The two sources listed under his military service have been the only ones that I have located. A contract surgeon was a civilian hired by the government to serve. There is an interesting article written about contract surgeons. ^[3]. Apparently the research for a contract surgeon's records can be a "challenge" as he was not an official member of the service.
