Biography

John Whick was born in 1778. He was the son of John Whick and Lettice Taylor.

John joined the Royal Marines in 1796 and served on at least 16 ships, including HMS Victory under James Saumerez from 1808 until 1812.

John's letters to his family are a significant source for life on board the Victory post-Trafalgar.

John returned to headquarters at Portsmouth in December 1812. A note on his naval record states "DD at Quarters" on 4 January 1813. This is generally accepted as a shorthand for "discharged dead", although it could also simply be "discharged".
