Robert was born in 1878[1] in Briestfield, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of Thomas Whitaker and Mary Popplewell; his mother died in 1880 at the age of 26.[2]
In 1881 Robert lived with his father and maternal grandmother in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[3] By 1891 the family lived in Soothill near Batley in west Yorkshire.[4]
