Biography

Martin was born in 1858 in Mathews County, Virginia. He was the son of Francis White and Rebecca Parrott.

Martin shows up in censuses as both Martin, and Luther. Martin is recognized as "Luther White" (brother of John) of Baltimore in John White's obituary of 1912. Martin's closest sibling in age was Stanley B. White.

Martin shows up in directories working with his brother John in Baltimore at his sash manufacturing plant, as well as clerking at his Father's (Francis T. White) hotel in Baltimore. Around 1920, Martin completely disappears from all Baltimore directories. The fact is, the Martins listed in the directories may not even be the correct person.

Martin's mother, Rebecca Parrott, dies in Oct. of 1900. The family had been living at 1706 Mosher in Baltimore for at least 5 years prior, according to the directory. However, Rebecca's location is listed as 908 N. Monroe at the time of her death.

Martin's brother Stanley B. White, also marries in 1900. The family appears to split with both parents being deceased, and one of the two closest brothers in age, Stanley, marries a widow with two children, Ida Virginia Alvey.

In 1901, Martin is living at 908 N. Monroe, according to the Baltimore directory. After 1903, various Martins show up in various locations and he becomes impossible to track.

In 1903 we see Martin living with his nephew, Virgil Church, in the Baltimore city directory at 727 N. Carey St.

It's not until 1912, when Martin's oldest brother, John William White, passes away in Mathews County that we hear about him in John's obituary. He is referred to as "Luther White of Baltimore". However, further research revealed Martin's death on November 21, 1905. He was buried alongside his mother and sister in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. He was 47 years old. The reporters in Mathews obviously had no idea about the family in Baltimore and were basing their reports on old information.

At this juncture, we don't know if Martin married or had any children.
