Margaret Whitman was born Margarit Weidemann (Weydman) to German parents on 20 July 1766. Her father was from Meerfelden, Germany, and emigrated to Boston in 1751 where he and Margarets mother were married. The family name Weidemann became "Weydman" and finally morphed into Whitman. She was living in Ashburnham, Massachusetts at the time she married Orsamus Bailey who was from Methuen, Massachusetts. They were married in Vermont on March 7, 1787. The 1790 U.S. Census has them as living in Leamington, Vermont in that year although in that same year they seem to have left Leamington to settle in Eaton. (family farm in Cookshire, Lwr. Canada) She and Orsamus went on to have 12 children in twenty years. Margaret passed away on May 22, 1842.
Vital Records of Ashburnham, Massachusetts: To the End of the Year 1849 on page 83 stated that she was born on 20 July 1776, but it was slightly different from the original birth record, which stated she was born on 20 July 1766, so 1766 should be the correct date.[1][2] The year she was born in 1776 must be the result of a misprint.
