Biography

Abner Foy Wilkerson was born April 12, 1888, in Clayton, Barbour, Alabama, a son of Edmund Everette Wilkerson and Sally Jerusha Baker. Using his middle name of "Foy" he is found at the age of 12, as "Fay Wilkerson" a single, white male, residing in the home of his parents in Dothan, Henry county, Alabama in 1900. [1] In 1910, "Foy Wilkerson" age 22, is found living in Attapulgus, Decatur county, Georgia with his father Edward E. Wilkerson and wife "Ella." [2] Foy appears to be one of nine children in his family.

Abner Foy Wilkerson's Draft card for World War I confirms his date and place of birth. The image, which may be viewed on FamilySearch.org indicates that he is a single young man, of medium build, slender with light brown eyes and dark brown hari. [3] Abner Foy Wilkerson entered military service July 1, 1919, in St Louis, Missouri. [4]

Foy married Clara Belle Fortson, born in January, 1900, in Alabama, a daughter of Thomas Benjamin Fortson and Parchie Anna Bond. [5] They became the parents of as many as seven children. Foy and Clara are found on the 1920 census, living in Houston county, Alabama. [6] By the 1930 census, A. Foy Wilkerson and Clara are living in Climax, Decatur county, Georgia, with children Carlton, Kathleen and Irene. [7] Foy is found as "A.F.Wilkerson" on the 1940 census of Decatur county Georgia. Children in the home are Carlton, Kathleen, Irene, Emma Jean, Hilda Ruth, and Annell. (one son and six daughters) [8]

Abner Foy Wilkerson died June 29, 1961, in Dothan, Houston county, Alabama and is buried in the churchyard of the Bay Springs Baptist Church, in Dothan. [9]
