James was born in 1837.

In 1859 at Newport, Monmouthshire, he married Frances Avery. They came to New Zealand around 1861-1863. [1]

He passed away 16 November 1898. He is buried at Waikumete. [2] [3]

In about 1933 his children became eligible for a share in his father's estate in Wales, which had been on hold for the life of a tenant. The children at this time were: [3]

  • Reginald John Phelps Williams of Auckland, coal and firewood merchant.
  • Sarah Ann Hagen wife of Wilson Hagen of Auckland, power board assistant.
  • Frances Jane Williams (71), wife of John Williams of Auckland, timber worker.
  • Minnie Rogers (68), wife of Thomas Rogers of Auckland, retired farmer.
  • Grace Sutton (57), wife of William Sutton of Auckland, marine engineer.
  • Emily Crafts (66), wife of Oliver Crafts of Gisborne, caretaker.
  • Elizabeth Bell (55), widow
  • Ada Gregg (53), wife of Edward Gregg of Gisborne, butcher.
  • Alice Smythe (53), wife of Charles Smythe of Gisborne, engineer.
  • Letitia Marsh, died 9 July 1910 age 41.
