Biography

James Winning was born on 10 September 1813 in Barony, Lanarkshire[1], son of Henry Winning (1783–1849) and Isabella Wotherspoon (~1796–<1849).

Census entries:

  • 1851 - 125, West Muir Street, Barony, Northern[2].

James married Mary Gray on 3 Jul 1849 in Barony, Glasgow[3]. Their known children were:

  • Jane Neilson winning (1851–1925)
  • Isabella Wotherspoon Winning (1853– )
  • Mary Gray Winning (1855–1928)
  • John Gray Winning (1856–1858)

James died on 23 March 1857 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire[4], aged 43.

Research Notes

1851 census entry[2] also shows a son, David Winning, age 15. The relationship here should perhaps be brother.

James's widow in 1861 - New Road, Barony, High Church[5].
