Mamie Hammill, 99, long-time resident of Wenatchee, Wash., died August 14, 2007.

Her funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Jones and Jones Chapel, Wenatchee.

Mamie was born October 27, 1907, at Ree Heights, S.D. to John and Jennie Wiren. She was valedictorian of her high school graduating class. After high school, she attended Huron College in Huron. She married Ray Hammill in Pierre on December 26, 1930. They had to keep their marriage secret, because in those days married women could not teach school.

Due to the Depression, there were few employment opportunities in South Dakota, so in the spring of 1933 they started west. Mamie, Ray and their six-month-old daughter, Mary Jane, settled in Wenatchee Valley that summer.

Mamie's 99+ years were full of challenges, rewards and service.

During her 74 years in Wenatchee, she taught at South Wenatchee Elementary. She obtained her master's degree from Central Washington University, and taught at Wenatchee High school. She was a dedicated teacher who took a personal interest in the students she taught.

Mamie found great pleasure in being active in her church, Calvary Bible. She taught Sunday school, organized summer Bible School, sang in the choir and enjoyed the fellowship of her many long-time friends. She was active in Eastern Star, Washington State Teacher's Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Wenatchee Garden Club. Other interests included cooking, reading painting, sewing, flower arranging and travel.

She is survived by a son, Charles (Cleo) Hammill of Bend, Ore.; a daughter, Patricia Hammill (Francis) Hutchins of Kenmore, Wash.; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Ray, and her daughter, Mary Jane, preceded her in death.

Contributions may be made n Mamie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
