Biography

Charles Henry Witty was born on February 27, 1901 in Gordon Township, Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada to parents James Witty and Catherine (Neely) Witty.

The Witty Family lived in May Township, District of Algoma East in Ontario during the 1911 Census of Canada. Within the household were James (age 46, farmer) and Catherine (age 38) along with their children Jane (age 14), Mary (age 13), Charles (age 10), Jessie (age 6), Sarah (age 5), William (age 2), and Joseph (9 months old). Their religion was recorded as Anglican, except for Catherine who was listed as Methodist.^[1]

The family continued to live in May Township during the 1921 Census of Canada. The household included James (age 54, farmer) and Cate (age 49) with their children Charles (age 20), Jean (Jessie?) (age 17)^[2], Nelly (Sarah?) (age 15), William (age 13), and Joseph (age 10).^[3] The family lived in a four room wood house.
