On 14 May 1919, when he was eight years old, he was struck by an automobile near his home in Davenport, Iowa. While on their way home from school, Edwin and some friends were lured into the street by the sight of a dead rabbit laying in the road. As the boys hovered over the creature, the car, driven Lincoln Peiffer, came along and struck young William, dragging him several yards, dislocating his shoulder and leaving what would likely be a permanent scar on his face. Edwin's parents sued the driver for $2170, claiming he was going too fast, failed to slow, and didn't honk. The came was settled five months later for $150.
In 1923, Edwin came to Rock Island, Illinois with his parents, and it was there that he spent his teenage years. In Rock Island, he attended and St. Joseph's Catholic School.
On 15 Nov, 1930, Edwin married Ina Wheeler. They had six children, Dorothy, Loretta, Beverly, Donald, James and Thomas.
Edwin died 5 Mar 1940, at Rock Island, following a long illness.
