Alma was born in February 1889, in Erie, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Ernest Woeckener and Elizabeth Fluegel. In 1900, she was 11 years old and residing at her parents' home in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she attended school.
She married Hugh Thomas McKiernan and had seven children. She was widowed in the 1920s, and did not remarry.
