William Tatum Wofford, Brigadier General, Confederate States Army. Graduated from Franklin College in 1844. First experienced military life in 1847 during the Mexican–American War, where he was a Captain in the Georgia Mounted Volunteers. In the War Between the States, Wofford was promoted to Colonel of the 18th Georgia Infantry, then promoted to Brigadier General in January 1863. Assumed command of the Subdistrict of Northern Georgia, of the District of Georgia, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida in January 1865, a post he held until he surrendered in Kingston, Georgia.[1]
He was the son of William Hollingsworth Wofford and Nancy M Tatum. [2][3]
His 1st marriage was to Julia Adelaide Dwight (1830-1878) on 16 August 1859.[4] She was the daughter of Samuel Dwight (1796-1859) and Mary Ann Jamison (1799-1868).
His 2nd marriage was to Margaret E. Langden on 2 November 1880.[5]
William passed away in 1884. Final resting place in Cassville Cemetery, Cassville, Georgia.[6]
Research Notes
It appears that Benjamin J Wofford was the grandfather of William Tatum Wofford according to Benjamin's Find A Grave entry.[7] and great-grandson of William Wofford (1728-1823), an American Revolutionary War hero.[8]
