Biography

This biography was developed within the context of an ongoing project to study the families of Margaret (Magill) Goodall and her five sons. Genealogical data suggests that the first two sons were fathered by a William Goodall; court records suggest that George Wood fathered the third; and there are no known records concerning the father of the other two. The relationship of this George Wood to the Goodall family is based largely on indirect sources and has been detailed in the Margaret Goodall Family mail list at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Margaret_Goodall_Family/info. Anyone with additional data, or simply an interest in the family, is encouraged to join the Yahoo group or contact this profile manager directly at JJLNV@Comcast.net.

George Wood was born about 1780 in North Carolina. On 5 February 1805 in Jefferson County, Tennessee George Wood married a Margery Snodgrass. There is no indication that he fathered any children by her. Perhaps she died in childbirth. Whatever happened, this left George free to migrate to Pope County, Illinois, possibly escorting Widow Margaret Goodall along the way. According to court records there, he fathered two children by her and possibly also her two younger sons.

By the time of the 1840 census, George had returned to Tennessee, married Samantha "Mary" Noel, and had produced six children by her, including three sons and had moved on to Union, Marion County where Margaret Goodall and her family where also located.

The 1850 census, shows George, age 70, surrounded by the three sons born in Tennessee and an additional son born in Arkansas and their families. Furthermore, Washington Goodall, his son by Margaret is a fifth son in the cluster of properties. Additionally within the same county are Margaret and three of her other sons and their families. Finally, in George's own household are an adult female and six children, ages 14 and under. Mary Wood, the adult is apparently his wife and the children are from his fourth family.

Based on a number of family trees, George may have died in Missouri City, Fort Bend County, Texas in 1855 at age about 75.
