Abiel was a son of Abiel Wood (1743-1811) and Betsey (Tinkham) Wood (died 1802). He first married Hannah Hodge on 30 November 1793 at Wiscasset in the part of Massachusetts which later became the state of Maine. He was elected as a Member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives from 1807 to 1811, and to the United States House of Representatives from 1813 to 1815. After the death of his first wife in 1814, he was again elected to the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1816 and married Jane Anderson on 24 November 1818. After the death of his second wife in 1827, he married Lydia Theobald (1798-1884) in 1830.
