Birth date estimated as 25 years before his oldest child.
There are two widespread beliefs about William and his wife Mary. Both assume that her maiden name was Turner, and that they married either in Stoke Fleming in 1743 or in Sandford in 1755.
Assuming that the children are correct, the latter belief is obviously unlikely (as their first child was born in 1750); the former also seems unlikely, as Stoke Fleming is a long distance from Alphington - much further than people generally tended to move in Devon in the 1700s. Further evidence would be necessary to support such a claim.
There is also a marriage record for William Wotton and Mary Arnold in Dunsford in 1749 - this is much closer and therefore arguably more plausible than Stoke Fleming, but no one seems to believe that it is correct.
