Christian Marjory Emily Carlisle (Yandell) Waller (1894-1954)
Christian Marjory Emily Carlisle Yandell was born 02 August 1894 at Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. She was the daughter of William Yandell and Emily James. [1]
Christian Marjory Emily Carlisle Yandell married Mervyn Napier Waller in 1915 at Victoria, Australia. [2]
Christian (Yandell) Waller and her husband Napier Waller encouraged her niece, Clytie "Klytie" (Sclater) Pate with her interest in art. Klytie Pate became an outstanding potter and was awarded an Order of Australia in 1991 for her service to the Arts, especially ceramic art and sculpture.
Christian Marjory Emily Carlisle (Yandell) Waller passed away 25 May 1954 at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia. [3]
WALLER. —The Funeral of the late Mrs. CHRISTIAN WALLER will leave Taylor's chapel, 8 Heidelberg road, Ivanhoe, THIS DAY, after a service commencing at 3.15 p.m., for the Melbourne Crematorium, Fawkner.
Mrs Napier Waller, wife of the distinguished stained-glass window and mural artist, died yesterday at her home, Fairy Hills, after a long illness. She was 59.
Mrs Waller was a fine stained-lass artist herself. At Fawkner Cemetery, where she was buried to day, the chapel incorporates a stained-glass design of hers. Some of her finest windows are in St. Mark's Church, Canterbury. Her woodcuts illustrate the book, "The Great Breath." She used her own name, Christian Yandell, for much of her work.
Some remarkable efforts in pictorial art are on view in Singer's windows, Collins-street. They are the work of a young Bendigo girl, Miss Christian Yandell who has only just reached her fourteenth year. The subjects and arrangement are evidently inspired by a study of Alma Tadema's engraved works, and their execution shows that they have been carried through without reference to models either for figure or draperies. The ambition of the youthful painter is extraordinary and that she has been able to accomplish so much with imagination as her chief resource is still more extraordinary. Naturally they are crude in scheme, deficient in drawing, wandering in composition, and without much technical quality in the placing and manipulation of colour. But notwithstanding these defects they are promising achievements for one so young who is merely a child in appearance. The pictures are being exhibited in the hope that by means of an art union a sufficient sum of money may be raised in order that Miss Yandell may be sent to the drawing school at the National Gallery, where her undoubted talent will receive the necessary training.
The paintings of the Bendigo girl artist, Miss Christian Yandell, now being shown in Melbourne, will be brought back to Bendigo next week for further exhibition here.
Some time ago a Castlemaine girl, Miss Christian Yandell, under 15 years of came into prominence in Bendigo, where she has been re siding for the past few years, as a talented artist. A private exhibition of her pictures was held, which many of the leading citizens of Bendigo attended, and considered some thing should be done to permit her to continue her studies either in Victoria or abroad, and at the instance of the Mayor of Bendigo an art union was inaugurated, which has been fairly successful.
Miss Yandell leaves Bendigo next week to take up a course of study at the Melbourne National Gallery, where it is considered by leading art critics her undoubted talent will win for her a travelling scholarship, which will enable her to study abroad.
At the request of a number of Castlemaine residents the pictures will be exhibited in the shop window of Mr R. Dann, Templeton street, for a short period, commencing to-day, after which they will go on to Melbourne for a private viewing by several Melbourne artists who have expressed a desire to see them. The pictures in Mr Dann's window are of surprising merit, and; as they form the prizes in the art union, local residents will not hesitate to purchase tickets, more especially as the money will assist a native of the town to study in order to win distinction.
A committee has been formed for the purpose of raising funds to assist the girl artist, Miss Christian Yandell, who is a native of this town, to complete her studies at the Melbourne National Gallery
Miss Christian Yandell (Mrs. Napier Waller) emerges from her shell with three amazingly good drawings in water color.
This artist is seen too rarely. Now and then, planted away in a corner, one comes across a gem in color by this painter, who, with her husband, forms two at the most interesting art personalities in Victoria.
Two beautiful stained glass windows, the gift of a resident of Ivanhoe who wishes to remain anonymous, have recently been placed over the altar in St, Jude's Church, Alphington. They were designed and drawn by Christian Yandels (sic) (Mrs Napier Waller). :The subjects are the "Light of the World" and "Christ Blessing Little Children," and the artist has treated her subject from a purely decorative standpoint. The colors are rich and harmonious and the tone effect is well observed.
Under the title "Australian Fairy Tales" Mr. Hume Cook, formerly M.P., has published a book that will delight the heart of every Australian child, presenting fairies definitely Australian, and illustrated profusely by Christian Yandell, it is a welcome addition to the books for Australian children.
An Interesting experiment in the production of hand-printed books is being made by Mrs Christian Waller, who is known for her stained glass and decorative work. Her "Golden Arrow" press, consisting of an old-fashioned hand press, has been set up at Fairy Hills, Ivanhoe.
She hopes to publish one book a year. The first production, "The Great Breath," consists of symbolic illustrations for which Mrs Waller cut the linoleum blocks. Paper cutting and binding have also been done by hand. The labor is such that it will probably not be possible to produce more than one edition of 150 copies in a year.
Editions in color may be a later development of the press.

. . . . . .Many other entrants have sent in works of high artistic merit, among them being such well-known names as Norman Carter, Napier Waller, and E. Buckmaster.
A new note was struck in a somewhat decoratively treated portrait by Napier Waller—a portrait of his wife (nee Miss Christian Yandell) with their pet Airedales.
