Earl was born in 1890. He is the son of Charles W. Young who was born in Ohio, USA. Earl passed away around 1971. Earl was a Shriner in the Freemasons, having achieved the 32nd degree. Earl and his wife, Edna, had one son whose name was Robert E. Young, born in 1925. The photo, which was taken in front of their spacious home on 27 Fithian Ave., Merchantville, Camden, New Jersey, USA, shows in the back row: Earl on the left; standing next to Edna; in the middle, with Bird Smith Dawson on the right. Standing in the front row are Raymond Burton Ceruti, age about 5, and his sister, Marion Grace Ceruti, age about 8. Bird, Raymond and Marion are Edna's first cousin, and first cousins, twice removed respectively. Bird Smith Dawson is the grandmother of Raymond and Marion. Most likely, Lucille Dawson Ceruti took the photo.
Earl's occupation changed over the course of his life. In 1920, he was a salesman in the woolens industry. In 1919, he was a storekeeper in the United States Navy. He became a Freemason that year at the age of 28. He was initiated on 7 Mar. 1919, passed on 4 April 1919, and raised on 6 June 1919 in the Grand Lodge of New Jersey. By 1942, he worked for the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, New Jersey.
The residents of his home included Earl, his wife, Edna, and her disabled older brother, Bert Patton, who was likely recently deceased by the time this photo was taken. One can surmise with reasonable confidence from circumstantial evidence that Bert was provided the middle room upstairs, with the bay window, visible in the upper right of the photo. The inside of Bert's room with this window is pictured on his profile. Bert's bed was situated by the window so he could look out even though he rarely was able to go out. These data attest to the kind consideration that Earl's family showed Bert, a fellow Freemason, whom everyone loved.
This home had plenty of room for guests as well. Several cousins would visit at a time. The house had a special staircase for the servants to use. It was a safety hazard, especially for children, because it was too steep. Earl had installed a hand railing across its entrance to remind guests not to use it. Of course, the younger cousins wanted to use it all the more because it was off limits, but no one wanted to offend Uncle Earl. Instead, they amused themselves by looking at Uncle Earl's Shriner hat and his other Masonic memorabilia.
In all likelihood, Earl's home originally belonged to Edna's parents, Elmer Patton and Margaret Bird Patton, whose household had two servants. More research is needed to determine the previous ownership of the house. A dispute among the sources was discovered about whether Earl's birth date was 14 or 16 June, 1890. 16 was selected because Earl signed the World War II draft registration card with that day typed on it. The sources differ on whom his birth mother was - Tillie Evans or Lillian Young.
