Biography

Fritz Gottlieb Zapffe was a polar explorer and also owned a pharmacy in Tromsø. ^[1]

Fritz was born 9 October 1869 in Larvik, Vestfold, the son of the painter Carl Johan Zapffe and Caroline Hansen. Fritz was baptized 28 November of the same year at the church in Larvik.^[2]

Fritz married Gudrun Wessel on 19 August 1897. They were the parents of two children: Peter and Signe.

At the time of the 1900 Norway Census, Fritz and his family were living in Tromsø. Members of the household included Fritz, born 1869 in Larvik, Gudrun, born 1870 in Vaerdalen, Peter Wessel, born 1889 in Tromsø, and Carl Johan Zapffe, Fritz's father, born 1824 in Moss.^[3]

Ten years later, at the time of the 1910 census, the Zappfe family was living in Tromsø, where Fritz was working as a pharmacist. Also living in the household were Gunhild, son Peter, and daughter Signe.^[4]

He acquired in 1915 Storgata 42 in Tromsø and established the pharmacy Nordstjernen there. [1] He participated in Roald Amundsen's North Pole Expedition in 1925 as a sanitary man and a supply manager.^[5]

He died 2 June 1956 in Tromsø.^[6]
