Kuniko was born on 21 February 1928, the daughter of Yasujiro Tsutsumi and Misao Aoyama. It is possible that Misao's sister might have been Kuniko's mother.
Kuniko visited Paris in 1957, but never left as she became a writer. While in Paris, She is credited with introducing Hermes and Yves Saint Laurent to Japanese market. Kuniko visited Japan on several occasions, including in 1964 when she visited her father at a hospital in Tokyo. She closed his eyes right after his death on 26 April.
She passed away on 16 June 1997; Pierre Cardin once called her "an exceptional woman, discreet and full of grace" at her funeral.
