Private Albert Henry Clark was born February 9, 1844 (need place of birth) to Thomas Goode Clark (1815 - 1863) & Margery Brown (Rogers) Clark (1822 - 1918). He was a Confederate Soldier in the Mississippi 42nd Infantry Company F. He was killed at the great “Battle of Gettysburg”  July 1, 1863 alongside his brother Jonathan Clark (1842 - 1863) & father. see F.A.G. Link. We need help updating his profile with more sources and improve upon his military sources and maybe an updated bio. This is very tragic and a story that definitely gets your attention if you love civil war history.

Note: it appears the bodies were never recovered but a memorial is been placed for them. If you read the mother’s obituary you definitely can get a good sense of her grief due to the tragedy of the civil war

They are briefly shown in this YouTube By Gettysburg NPS at 2:40 frame

Apparently they were all in the same Company F no doubt we’re together in death; however the brother appears to have been killed the following day July 2nd?

Thank you for this post. Albert Henry Clark was born in Jackson, Tennessee as our family records show. He never married and he and his brother Jonathan along with his father (My great great grand father) Thomas Goode Clark were all three killed in the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. This was a tremendous blow to the family, losing not only a husband and father of her 8 children , but also losing the two oldest sons of the family, Jonathan and Albert Henry Clark to the cause.

I am a descendant,  as many from this area in Calhoun County, Mississippi are. Our Heritage is precious to us and we tell it to our children handing down the knowledge of our heritage .

Hi, Andrew,

If he was killed on July 1, it was likely in the railroad cut north of Gettysburg. The 42nd Mississippi and the rest of Davis' Brigade was trapped in the railroad cut and mowed down by Union soldiers.

If you haven't seen it, there's a great YouTube on Davis' Brigade on the first day at Gettysburg, available here.

It's unlikely that anyone from the regiment was killed on July 2, since the regiment saw no action on that date. He may have died on July 2 of wounds suffered on July 1, or he may have died on July 3, when the remnants of the 42nd Mississippi and the rest of Davis' Brigade were on the extreme left flank of Pickett's Charge.

I'm also a descendant of a veteran of the 42nd Mississippi,.Cpl. William Jefferson Killingsworth of Company G. He survived the brutal fight at the railroad cut on July 1 but was captured during Pickett's Charge on July 3, He died in February 1864 while a POW at Fort Delaware and is buried in a mass grave there.

My great grandfather was in company F of the 42nd Mississippi. He was from Banner, MS which is 24 miles south of Oxford, MS where they enlisted. Since his mother his buried in Serepta, MS and the company was formed there, I would bet he was born there. I would check the census records to see where his parents were or deed records. My ancestors on both sides lived close to Serepta, MS and I don’t live far from there now. Please contact me if I can help further.

I discovered that I had one direct ancestor and one gr-gr-Uncle who fought at Vicksburg---the latter was killed.  I like to study the battles so I gather information about their brigade and found detail histories that showed where they were during the battle on that specific date.

The 42nd Mississippi Regiment was in General Joseph R. Davis' brigade that included the 11th Mississippi Regiment---which was literally wiped out after their fight at the Rail Road Cut the first day and Pickett's charge the last day.  It also included the 2nd Mississippi & 55th North Carolina regiments.

There is a List of Killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.  I think it was on Google Books (free viewing) but I can't find it.  That would be a another good source.  I did get a hit on a 4 volume work but it only has Volume 1.

Sorry I can't be of better help.  I can help if you need to know more about his brigade.
