My grandfather informed my father that our family roots were from the Allen Plantation.  Over the years I found no information on the Allen Plantation, but today my research came across the Allendale plantation which was owned by the former governor of Louisiana and slave owner, Henry Watkins Allen.  My father said our surname, McAllister, was adopted from a kind overseer who worked on the plantation.

There is an article on Henry Watkins Allen in Wikipedia. Birth was in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He died from a stomach ailment in Mexico at the age of 45 and his body was returned to New Orleans for burial in 1866.

Part of the article reads, "He later moved to Louisiana, where he acquired a sugar cane plantation, dependent on the labor of enslaved African Americans."
