Robert's father was Joseph , his mother unknown at present. Robert (born 1821 Penrith, Cumberland, England ) married Elizabeth Hannah Mary Ann Hoare (born 1828, Sarrat, Hertfordshire) in 1854 in London. They had a son, Joseph (1855-) They migrated to Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia in 1855, settling in Newcastle, NSW  before selecting land in Mt Jeffcott, near Donald, Victoria.

The marriage of Richard Dixon to Elizabeth took place on 16 April 1854, Highgate, St. Michael. London Marriages & Banns (1754-1921) records Richard's age as 32, and his father Joseph Dixon.

England Births & Christenings (1538-1975), records the christening of a Richard Dixon, on 28 May 1823, Penrith, St. Andrews, the son of Joseph Dixon & Sarah.

There are two candidates for Sarah:

Sarah Hamilton who married Joseph Dixon, 18 November 1817 in Walton, Cumberland. As Walton is very close to Carlisle, I believe this Sarah unlikely.

Sarah Jon married Joseph in 1817, Renwick, Cumberland, a district close to Penrith. This Sarah was christened 14 April 1793, Renwick, Cumberland the daughter of William Jon  & Anne Jackson.

Many candidates exist for a Jseph Dixon, although I suspect he was born 1887- 1890.

NB The person is ROBERT DIXON, not  RICHARD.and they definitely married on April 20 1854 at Highgate St Michael. Father Joseph, mother unknown.

It is his parents and grandparents and beyond who I am researching.

My apologies I have typed the christian name of Elizabeth's father into my answer, but be assured Robert Dixon was used in reseach.

Thanks for your reply Ron  (are you the same person who is a member of my site on MyHeritage???)  I was wondering if it was common practice to have a christening a couple of years after the birth of a child??  I don't know much about customs of those days.

Thanks, Edward
No, I have no connection with " My Heritage" site, Edward.

Usually, christenings took place days or a few weeks after birth. Having said that, I have come across many were a year or more went by before the christening and invariably when the parents changed parish from the one in which they married. I have in my family, in Yorkshire, an instance were all five children were christened together; the eldest 16, youngest a few months.
