Need gift ideas? Give your DNA!

It is one thing to give a DNA test to a relative who is into genealogy.  It is a whole new level of gift giving to offer to take the DNA test yourself. The ladies need the guys to swab some yDNA, and the guys need the ladies to swab for FamilyFinder and mtDNA tests. The tests are still on sale at FamilyTreeDNA.com and this is a great gift for the genealogist in your family.

Please use this link to place your order and join our GFR and WikiTree DNA Project:  https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=WikiTreecomDNAProjec

You can join other projects as soon as you place your kit order.  You will receive a kit number and password that you will use to access your FamilyTreeDNA account page.

We have a new GFR and WikiTree webpage on FamilyTreeDNA that you should check out too. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/wiki-tree/about/background  We hope you will join us soon!

Ouch! Even sale prices are on the pricey side for most people. Sure wish these tests were more accessible. :-(
Well, that pays for the lab analysis, storage of the test samples, maintenance of the data in their huge database, and the matching service to help you connect with your genetic cousins.  If you can only afford one test, I recommend the 37 marker yDNA test for a man's paternal ancestry.  Upgrades and additional tests can be ordered later as desired.
Wait so the guy can only take the Y test? Doesnt that only trace your fathers line? I want to take both test (Yand MTFullsequence)to trace both lines. I was under the impression the father can take both?
You are absolutely correct.  Men have X and Y chromosomes and women have only X chromosomes.  Men can take all the DNA tests.  Women can not take the yDNA tests.
Mattice, men (and women) can also take an autosomal DNA test, which traces up all of your lines and is considered accurate for about five generations.  FamilyTreeDNA calls this, I believe, the family finder test.  It can be of great help to find distant cousins and break down 'brick walls' if you know how to analyze and use the test results (I highly recommend uploading your results to Gedmatch.com - a free site - once you obtain them).  Have fun and good luck!
