Ways to prove a first & middle name without using birth, death, marriage certificates?

My great grandfather's birth certificate has a name that differs from his death certificate and I need to find proof that this is the same person (which I know is).  Contacted the State Town Clerks office and they said back then (1905) they were hand written and they are certain what is there.  I'm looking for Amil Harold Castonguay.  On birth certificate its Harold J Castonguay.

What did he go by on census records,  in newspaper reports, land records or birth records of children?

Hi Brenda.  I don't think there's really another document that would constitute "proof."  Usually a birth certificate rules for establishing the name at birth.  It sounds as if your dilemma is only about given names(s), not LNAB, so that's not too serious a problem.  If you find records that seem to indicate g-gf began using a different given name at some point in his life, you can state that in the Bio, and it's pretty much your call as to how to show first name, middle name, nicknames, and preferred name.  If you are in the U.S. one type of record that I find to be very useful for determining how the person identified himself are the WWI and WWII Draft Registration Cards.  They were typically completed by the subject himself, and they seem to have real names and dates as the subject knew them.

My great-grandfather actually amended his when he was about 60, because he discovered that his name was "C". Just that one letter. So, he modified it to match (maybe because he was creating a will? I'm sure there's a story there, but don't think I'll ever find out). Probably not a usual occurrence, but might be worth checking to see if there's an amended record on file.
