By the way, Laura, I find it amusing that you titled your question index-style.
"Emoticons, use of"
:-)
As a librarian-in-training, I also really enjoyed that. :D
I was a library tech in Special Collections at UWF for 6 years then in Gov Doc and Reference for another 2 years.. I have worked at a Family History Center since 1975. I also have ADD :-)

There are a couple in the G2G editing box, but I don't use them. I have also never ascribed to the notion of adding strange combinations of punctuation marks to look like smiles or whatever else they're supposed to - sometimes with 90 degree roations to allow for. The practice has always seemed a little weird to me. I can usually make my feelings clear just fine with repeated exclamation points or question marks and an occasional "<grin>" tacked onto something. I have always thought the icons and punctuation marks were kind of silly and am happy that they are not used much here.

There are actually 21 "emoticons" on the g2g edit screen.
Philip, what's the emoticon for smart aleck?
LoL I'm not sure I should use that emoticon on an open forum... ;-)
btw...I'm starting to automatically see LoL as an emoticon...looks kinda like a stick-man drowning and calling for help... :-|
In a former life, I was an avid tournament bridge player. In those circles, LOL meant llittle old lady and that was long before the internet with it's new shorthand.

I'm a huge fan of the emoticon.
In person, sometimes people don't know when I'm being sarcastic. On the Internet, they always know. :-)
