Is there one source we can reference for sanctioned Wiki-Text?

There is.  I believe it is here  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Recommended_Tags

Great question!  (It is a little difficult to find, if you don't know where to look)  There are also links on this page to further information.

OK!  So that is the one source we should reference for acceptable usage.

Will WikiTree be removing Paul Bech's ā€œWikiTree Wiki Markup Manualā€ and Rob Ton's ā€œTons Tweaksā€?

What changes should I make to preserve the content of http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Arichat_Parish ?  It uses an "unsupported" scroll box.

The only pages you should be relying on for recommended tags are the ones on WikiTree help pages. Those are in http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:WikiTree_Help

Q&A in G2G and what's written on various free-space profiles are on wikitree.com but they're not WikiTree help pages. It would nearly impossible for anyone to monitor them all and make sure they're correct and up to date.

"Up to date" matters. What's recommended style today may not be tomorrow. We don't want to do this too often, so we are very conservative about what we recommend. That's why there are very few creative options described on help pages.

If you want to be more creative, it may in certain circumstances be OK, especially if it's a private profile. But you are taking a chance that what you're doing will later be specifically recommended against.

Thank You!

Tactical error on my part. Following the sheep is not the same as following the shepherd.

Chris, I am only trying to make this crystal clear. On the Wiki Tree Help Page http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:WikiTree_Help  At "EDITING TIPS"  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Editing_Tips. Scroll to the bottom, to MORE HELP Section  - Wikipedia Wiki Markup/and some others - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wiki_markup. That's on a wikitree help page, but if the Wikipedia page is not allowed, the link/s should be removed from the page.

Chris, Thank you, The removal (yesterday) of the links to wiki markup, from the editing page, has made it crystal clear to me.
Thanks, Anne. I agree that we shouldn't have had the link to Wikipedia's help pages.

I just edited http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Editing_Tips again. I think we need to start emphasizing that almost all creative formatting -- colors, alignment, etc. -- is not recommended. There is very little reason to do anything beyond plain text.

Footnotes are the trickiest things that most people should be concerned with. Others need to know about tags for categorization, templates, etc., but they should be following instructions on WikiTree help pages for those.

We should not encourage people to design pages. We collaborate on content here, not design. Design is secondary at best. It became a huge source of distraction and disagreement.
You mentioned colors in your reply above. Someone, (name escapes me) created a template {{red|text in here turns red}} also blue and green, and announced it here in G2G. Are these OK, because of the nature of Templates or are we whistling in the wind using them?
Hi Anne. Those were created by Rob Ton.

I don't know what to think of them. On the one hand, it's much better than doing the colored text with CSS. If we ever decide that the colors need to be adjusted, or that no colors should be used at all, we can simply edit those few templates. But on the other hand, I see no reason to encourage people to use colors. They're not recommended for any specific purpose. They may well be recommended against at a later date. People will be upset when this happens.

Bottom line: These are not officially recommended.
Thank you, but I am gonna be "sad" not use the creative side of me. Guess I'll just have to use the "smart" side.

Thought I replied earlier, must have forgotten to "Add comment"
