Hi Geoffrey!

I see that the birthdate given does align with a baptism that has only a mother's name in the transcription.  I would recommend that you get a look at the image of the baptism register somehow, and see if Dorothy is indicated as a widow, or a single mother having a child out of wedlock, or an error in the transcription to miss the father's name.

Also, the 1848 marriage certificate might name a father.  Of course it might be an imaginary father, but it is worthwhile to see what John said on that occasion.  You can order through Ancestry or thru the General Records Office (GRO)  You will need the year, quarter, volume and page numbers referenced below:

Name: Elizabeth Pedler
Registration Year: 1848
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration District: Bodmin
Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County: Cornwall
Volume: 9
Page: 63

Also, DNA research could answer this conclusively if you are able to find the appropriately related descendants to test.

Cheers
Shirlea

Thanks so much Shirlea, I think I'll leave it to the more experienced.  Really  I use Wikitree to record Air Force history but a few days ago I added and Aunt's biography Haynes-2888 . Now I know what went wrong in my family

Hi Geoffrey

I'm unable to get even a sniff of the George Bate - Isabelle Galway family.  Are they from a different part of England?

Not to jump to conclusions on you, but sometimes family records aren't exactly untrue, they just are a little different from what the readers expect.  For instance, my great-aunt was sure part of our family came from Ross County, Scotland.  In fact, not too far up that line was the surname Roose.  So, sort of connected in a way, not exactly gospel.

Cheers

Shirlea they were definitely Cornwall.  My Grandmother told me 60 years ago that we had Spanish (from the Armada) blood in the family.  She said from the Scilly Isles but it has recently struck me that the Armada had to sail right around britain and Ireland to get home and many were wrecked on the west coast of Ireland (Isabelle Galway) - who knows? I just try to leave breadcrumbs for others to follow Thank you   - Geoff

Just for interest, it seems that 397 crew members of the Armada ship Nuestra SeƱora del Rosario were held as POWs in Torquay for a few weeks.  It seems that a researcher named Paula Martin has figured out what happened to them after that - but so far i haven't found a free version of her book.

Thank you Shirlea, you've greatly added to my knowledge of Devon / Cornwall, I'm glad my postulation of shipwreck survivors has proved true.  Still no answer but I have too much else on at the moment to carry this further.  It started 20 years ago when I joined an Aunt up to an adult son, given up for adoption - one of the prouder moments of my life haynes-2888 . it is strange I married a Devonian (and found she had a half sister!
