Has anyone heard of "Lorne Rest" in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland?

I am doing research on a branch of the Scottish McNair family, specifically at this moment Isabella (Robertson) McNair.  She was my 2G-Grandmother.  In the 1881 Scotland Census she is living with several of her children (but her husband is apparently away) at "House above Lorne Rest" in Old Monkland (Western Division), Lanarkshire.  See FindMyPast.  I cannot identify or locate "Lorne Rest" and am wondering if anyone can help me with that.  Isabella is said to have been a "publican's wife", and so I am wondering whether "Lorne Rest" could have been a tavern.

I am also wondering whether the location could have been Swinton, since there is some family connection with that village.

There is one further rather odd coincidence.  In doing a Google Search for "Lorne Rest" I came across a passing mention of a "Lorne Rest" in Silverbanks, Cambuslang.  This is odd because Isabella lived at Silverbanks, Cambuslang as a child, and may in fact have been born there.

Hi Richard

The house above Lorne Rest was located in Swinton village. This is clearly shown as Village of Swinton in the Census return. Isabella McNair's household is Schedule 8 sitting between Schedules 7: "Swinton Cottage", and Schedules 9: "House above Lorne Rest" and 10 and 11: "Ferries Land" nos. 1 and 2.

No further information on Lorne Rest.

This same query was asked in a genealogy.com forum in 2001 https://www.genealogy.com/forum/regional/countries/topics/scotland/28020/ noting other surrounding households. Definitely in Swinton village. Street names in Swinton do not appear on the 1898 Ordnance Survey 25 inch to one mile sheet https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.85876&lon=-4.10743&layers=168&b=1&marker=55.858644,-4.105460

This is perfect, Neil.  Out of interest, what resource do you use to view the 1881 census in such detail?
Hey Richard

I see that you're a member of the Scotland Project (and England and Hungary).

Schedule details come from the image of the Census return page viewed on ScotlandsPeople https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/record-results?search_type=people&dl_cat=census&surname=m%2Anair&surname_so=wild&forename=isab%2Al%2A&forename_so=wild&second_person_forename_so=exact&sex=F&county=LANARK&record_type=census&year%5B0%5D=1881 Interestingly there were 18 Isabella McNairs (variants: Isabilla, Isabel) enumerated in Lanarkshire in that Census. Obviously a very ubiquitous family name!

Cheers, Neil

Ah.  Yes, the problem with using ScotlandsPeople to access the census is that the only way you can see if something is on a particular page is to search specifically for it.  If you get a hit, you have to pay your 6 credits to view it, which is fair enough.  But if you want to look at preceding or succeeding pages to check on the names of neighbouring addresses, or if you want to check on the occupants of a particular address to see if someone's name was transcribed incorrectly (a useful sleuthing technique!), that is so much harder to do, and the costs could accumulate pretty quickly.

It is so much more massively productive that the England and Wales censuses are fully accessible via Ancestry (and elsewhere).

This is the one I am familiar with, Rest & Be Thankful is a famous viewpoint where Glen Kinglas meets Glen Croe in Argyll, Scotland.  Usually areas that are passes or Mt. peaks have something similar.
