New "Our American Cousin" Mini-Project (Abe Lincoln)

Recently, I finished reading a fascinating book called Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination, by Thomas A. Bogar. It tells the long-ignored story of the numerous actors, managers, and crew members who were working at Ford's Theater the evening President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

As is my nature, I began looking for more information about these people online, beginning with Wikitree. To my dismay (or perhaps my joy?) I discovered that almost none of these intriguing individuals had a Wikitree profile. Thus, the WikiTree Our American Cousin Mini-Project was born!

Our American Cousin, of course, was the production being presented at Ford's theater the evening President Lincoln was shot. The Our American Cousin Free Spage Page includes links to the newly-created profiles of every cast member, crew member, and manager associated with the performance that night. It also includes a list of "possible" orchestra members which was not included in Boger's book.

Almost none of these individuals are currently connected to the Big Tree. Most have only the most minimal of biographies, and almost all need sourcing beyond Boger's book. If you are interested in this era of American history, especially in regard to theater people, please consider heading over to the project page and giving me a hand. These people deserve to have their stories told and preserved.

What an amazing idea for a project.

I am particularly in awe of the relatively comprehensive list of people that you have managed to assemble.

I started in on Edwin Emerson, but am going to have to take a break and go to work.
David:

I finished up the profile, but I found a match and initiated a merge.  You're the PM when the other PM responds.

Great work on the Edwin Emerson profile, Roger. I've added a photograph for you.

Emerson was one of the many Ford's Company actors whose careers were destroyed by their association with Ford's Theater.

I decided to begin at the obvious starting point - the John Ford family. John Ford was the owner of Ford's Theater where the tragic event occurred. He was out of town on the night of the assassination, but two of his brothers were present. Harry Ford was serving as house manager, while James Ford was overseeing the box office.

I have enhanced John Ford's bio and have created detailed new profiles for his wife, ten siblings, two dozen nieces and nephews, their wives and their children. I am now working on the profiles of his eleven children and his grandchildren.

I am also working on the family of Harry Ford's wife, Blanche Chapman. She was a notable actress from a theatrical family, whose stage career spanned more than eight decades. Her parents were also well-known entertainers, and her English ancestors are said to have been involved in the theater dating as far back as the early 1700s. The challenge is that this has all been well-written about, but not well-documented.

So many fascinating stories to uncover!

John T. Ford's aunt Margaret married Edward Henry Handy, who worked for a time as a manager/doorkeeper at Ford's Theatre; when he died in 1876 there were newspaper stories claiming that he came into possession of the bouquet that Mary Todd Lincoln was carrying on the night of the assassination.
