Hi Wikitreers,

I have in my antique collection “A View of Miller Hill, East Hampton, Conn.” Vintage post card dated August 13, 1909 to a Mr. Harry Croft 408 North Willow Street, Waterbury, Conn. from a H.S. Carpenter.

Postage paid with a 1 cent stamp

Needs a 1900/1910 Census showing him living at this address in 1909. I assume he was born prior to 1900 likely 19th century birth but most likely passed before 2000. The name “Harry” might be a nickname for Henry? LNAB could also be “Craft” transcription needed. Also needs connecting.

Note on post card seems to read:

Dear Harry,

Excuse me for not writing sooner but I forgot to am having a fine time. I am coming about two weeks from Monday

H.S  Carpenter

Who was H.S. Carpenter? A possible Romance? A friend or family member?

Thank you

Think H.S. Carpenter might be Howard Sellew Carpenter, a young man of approximately the same age in Waterbury?

I believe you found his boyhood friend at age 14 living on #17 ?? avenue in the 1910 census how cool is that! Harry’s birthday was coming up when he mailed him this post card. They must of been best friends. Howard Carpenter’s father was listed as a commercial traveler but I can’t read the name of industry a bit illegible.

North willow street is seen in same census but can’t read the name of the avenue his friends lived on

Edit: could read 17 Chapman Avenue.

Omg it’s him see his FindAGrave memorial https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/45453617/howard-sellew-carpenter

His friend is buried in same cemetery as some of my family

Ancestry.com reads it as 15a Chapman Avenue in the 1910 Census

P.S.  But reads his father as 17.  Interesting.

His father's questionnaire in the 1917 Connecticut Military Census has 17 Chapman.

I wonder where the East Hampton connection comes in. Did Howard have East Hampton roots ? Both Howard and Harry lived in Waterbury in 1910 it appears. Interesting and Howard’s son is buried there in the same cemetery in east Hampton.
Oh I see so Howard’s father was a traveling salesman a pharmacist industry, living at 17 Chapman Ave in Waterbury. Somehow east Hampton comes into the picture. How fascinating!

His father's membership application for the Sons of the American Revolution says that he was born in Chatham (now East Hampton), Connecticut:

Chatham was apparently renamed East Hampton in 1915.

Oh I see how there is a connection now interesting because the post card is specific of “View of Miller Hill” maybe a place they went to or swam in the lake there.
Pulled a map of 408 North Willow Street to 17 Chapman Avenue and it’s 0.1 mile a minute away with both roads connecting in 1909 it would be a quick bike ride or horse ride notice Howard’s fathers record said yes to horse riding but no to automobile

Edit: typos

I’m very curious what Howard’s fathers disability was in the “1917 Connecticut Military Census” it’s a bit illegible? Anyone know?

Edited: I think “Nearsighted”

Both Harry and Howard are my distant cousins

Howard and Andrew are 7th cousins four times removed

Harry and Andrew are 8th cousins five times removed

More connecting needed but they are now connected

Edited: typos
