I always wondered what people thought when they got to see their photograph for the first time! (Today we take a thousand selfies till we get one we like!)

They probably just accepted it regardless. retakes must have been costly, and time-consuming. Maybe this is why there are so few photos of people smiling from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
