Creation of new profile, or not?

tidd-532. I have received a perfectly reasonable request asking for the Name at Birth to be changed from tidd to Tidd. The profile was originally created by another user, but that is neither here nor there. Merges have been done to several Tidd profiles related to this person which I am the owner of. The problem here is that the current last name is Tidd, so you get the person title Tidd formally tidd, which is a bit of a nonsense.

Do I really have to create a new profile, which is what will happen if I capitalise the FNAB, or is there a Tech wizard who can avoid this farce?

Since you are the manager you should be able to change the LNAB to Tidd yourself and then delete the duplicate last name. On the edit page, click on "edit" on the line for last name at birth and you will be able to change it.

I have done exactly what the help files tell me to, and a new profile has automatically been created.

I still think that this was a pointless exercise, and that such a simple change to capitalisation should be possible without the faff.

Of course, the other suggested merge of related person Sarah Pole has revealed yet another Tidd profile, this time Mathew Tidd, where someone has created a duplicate as per John Tidd for a Mathew tidd, her husband. As I am not the profile manager for that tidd, perhaps someone can propose to me a merge request to merge with my Mathew Tidd which has been in existence for some years now.

Beginning to wonder why I joined Wikitree…
I think what I really mean is, if someone tries to upload a gedcom with names starting with little letters, can’t Wikitree automatically capitalise the surnames?

I suppose there just might be a country somewhere in the world that does not use capital letters, that I would not know, but if there is cannot the source of the gedcom be identified in some way?

I am hoping that the duplicates of existing names would be flagged up regardless of the capitalisation, or do I just assume the person uploading a gedcom could not be bothered?

Ian, there certainly are surnames that do not start with capital letters. For a random example, see Johann Gerd von der Haar.
