Knights & Baronets & Rev prefix

I request that prefix  be deleted or used.

Used has ben rejected by Mr Whitten on the grounds that he doesnt want to be known as Mr but has curiously filled in his prefix as Mr

For myself I intend to alter all "my" people so that their first name reads Dr John, Rev Canon, HRH Prince or whatever. When prefix comes to be used, I will have Mr Whitten's problem of having to amend a lot of first names.

William,

I'm not sure I understand why you're so frustrated about this-- enough so to take on a one-person vendetta against wikitree doing the electronic equivalent of graffiti? You risk having your account shut down. Is the prefix field's placement really worth that?

My view is that the name at the top of the profile should be Fred Bloggs. That is his name. If he happens to be a Rev. Dr. Sir or anything else, that should appear below. I certainly don't expect my M.A. to appear in the Profile title as a suffix, so why the prefix?

Henry Planatagenet is a perfectly good name. Like many other lines there were several of them, so King and II should appear below.

I can tell you are frustrated angry with this. I think you want more character space in the Prefix field.  Am I correct? I didn't exactly follow your statement, "I request that prefix  be deleted or used." Or do you mean as the title on each profile?

I'm sure you have read the Style Guide and the Name Fields for European Aristocrats.

The only thing I can add is when you put non-name data in the First Name fields, the result is that they names won't sort alphabetically.  I think that in all the name lists and search results, for example, Sir William will appear in the S section rather than the W's.  This is probably not a problem for Arbuthnots, but it would be very inconvenient for Smiths, Jones or other common surnames.

What happens if you place these titles in the Other Nicknames field?  That is what I do with military officer ranks.  But then, you should probably follow the guidelines for European Aristocrats as they have been carefully considered and selected as a "best practice" for WikiTree.  smiley

My original proposal was :

I propose that the prefix and suffix be shown on

1  headline of profile,

2  when listed as a nuclear family member

3  as the parent in a family tree.

At the moment only the suffix is shown which is not logical.

Please provide reasons for your response.

I see that this is not going to happen so I now propose that prefix  be deleted ltogether. If it were to happen I do think both prefix and suffix shoould be enlarged but that is a different issue.

Incidentally I would point out that the birth certificate recently issued was made out NAME "HRH Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge"

As I said above, I diaagree on the headline. But I hadn't taken in the suffix appearing. You are right, that is illogical.

I think the top of the profile should be restricted to the name alone. It is much simpler. there is plenty of room in the Biography to include other things.

Reading Catherine's answer, I understand what she is saying, but I still think the simplest solution is best and service to country etc. can be lauded elsewhere.

Remind me someone.   What's the reason for excluding the prefix from the title of the profile page? I seem to recall there was a good reason.

Never  mind.  This has been discussed to death elsewhere.  William I am sorry it didn't go your way.  But I don't think raising it again and again is going to get you any different results.  Nor is violating current policy re use of the first name field.

as the descendant of a long line of military men from the Revolution to Viet Nam, I like placing their rank on the prefix so people know first thing, they served their country with honor and distinction

Would that it were more prominent and consistent.

Eg Sergeant Joe Bloggs VC
