John's family relationships were created in the Hurst family tree, which was then imported into WikiTree by the profile manager, Julie Morcom, so "we" don't have his birth certificate. It is possible that she has source material that she has not entered yet. You should send her a message and she may be able to give you more information.

Edwin Rice is John Carrick Whait's step father. His actual father is not known and there is no birth certificate for him on the South Australian Geneology website.

John was born in 1853 and his mother Sarah Carrick Whait married Edwin Rice in 1855, when he was about 2 years old. That is why the relationship in Wikitree is noted as Non-biological.
