Why did so many people leave Limestone County, Alabama and go to Van Zandt County, Texas in thr late 1800's?

Alabama and Georgia Confederates left the devastated South for Texas, Arizona and California because the Yankee Army 1861-65 burned towns and plantations in the Civil War.Harsh Reconstruction measures taken by the North to punish the rebels made living there intolerable for many.

In addition to what Living Evans wrote, in order to keep slaves  and to reduce financial losses many plantation owners moved west.
