getting death certificate in Ontario Canada not knowing death date

Hi,

I'm looking for the death cert. of my Grandfather Frederick Wright. Since my mother was adopted I only have the info I've researched on him and NO date of death (see Research Notes at link above). Ontario registrar general can give death certs for family past the ones publicly available (1947+) on Ancestry etc. However, they charge $15/5yr period to search for date of death in the case you don't know it; ie. my case. Then another 15 or 20 for the actual cert.

This could be costly given that I know he was alive in /45. Assuming he lived to 100 that would take me to 1990 ie. 45 years  ie. 9*$15+15= $150.

So, my question is...does anyone know a better way to go about this?

thx

George

MORE INFORMATION: This is like an episode of Murdoch!! :-)

Frederick was alive and mentioned as attending the lawyer of his father-in-law's concerning the latter's will in Feb 1946.
I should also mention that in the research notes in Fred's profile you will see that am archivist in Carmarthen couldn't even find him but we think we found his parents. But I can't link fred to them!
I saw your original query has been answered, but you may be able to find more information on his life, as he was a veteran of WW1.  If you haven't tried already: Library & Archives Canada http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/genealogy/Pages/introduction.aspx
I already tried. I found his attestation papers but he was discharged for medical reasons before he saw action. Not much there other than he said he was from Carmarthen and his address 57 Devon Rd off Danforth and his Wife's name Rose.

Hi Frank, thanks very much for your help but I've seen this guy in Prospect Cemetery before but his parents didn't jive with those of my Fred's; whose parents are Edward Wright and Elazibeth Mark from marriage cert . Also, although my Fred enlisted in WWI he was turned away on medical grounds; thus wouldn't be a Pte on grave stone. Also, age of 54 on headstone would place bdate at 1897; my Fred on atestation papers says he was born 1890 (see Wright-27897 Research Notes). There is also another Frederick CE Wright at Prospect but that's not him either since (I'm in Ottawa) both men have separate files in Library and Archives Canada. Like I said before this guy is a tough nut to crack. I applaud anyone who can help. thx

Here's the obit from the Globe and Mail, July 30, 1951: Wright, Frederick. At Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, on Saturday, July 28, Frederick Wright, beloved son of the late John and Lilly Wright.... Prospect Cemetery. But this may not be your Frederick Wright because the parents are different. :(

Thx very much Laurie. Yes the parents don't match. Also according to the 1921 census he immigrated in 1902 so couldn't have been married in Carmarten in 1910. Although the Carmarten ref really caught my eye!! I really do appreciate the effort you guys are making but this guy just doesn't want to be found. That is why I am trying to hunt down relatives with DNA as well as trying to find his death record and go from there.

thx

George

Definitely a fellow who doesn't want to be found! Good luck with the DNA search.

Instead of looking for Fred, can you track his wife and kids? Is there any way to possibly find them in the Voter's Lists on Ancestry?
by Christine Daniels G2G6 Pilot (168k points)
Good idea Christine but his wife died in the Brockville hospital in 1936. Two of his kids went to Britain and I think have passed on-but can confirm. My mother (adopted out daughter) didn't know him and has passed on. Other son and daughter in Ontario have passed as well.

Did find !!!! Frederick Wright and his oldest son's name in Voter's list!! However, no way to determine if these are the right ones (no pun intended !). Same thing in street directories. Found him in the 20s but because his occupation kept changing and there were other Fred Wrights it was impossible to keep track of who was the right one.

On a brighter note...I found a Frederick Wright at the York Cemetery who's dates roughly align but have not contacted them for more info yet. However, I think I've been down this road before and ruled him out for some reason. BUT will retrace steps...maybe it might be him. I can't seem to find any info on find a grave etc. Anyone know of site that might have info on burials at York? I'll try calling tomorrow as well.

thx gang...

Or, can we create a timeline? That will narrow down where/when to search:

1890: Born in Wales

1915:

1921: residing with Rose in Toronto (1921 Census)

  • Wright, Fredric, 2879 Danforth Ave, head, age 30 (b abt 1891), born England, parents born England, imm. 1902, occ. assistant cook
  • Wright, Rose, wife, 25 (b abt 1896), born Ontario, father b Italy, mother b Ireland, housewife
  • Wright, Fredie, son, 4 (b abt 1917)
  • Wright, James, son, 2 (b abt 1919)
  • Wright, Gertrude, daughter, 1 (b abt 1920)

1936: death of Rose

1946: mentioned in father's will

etc..?
Wow you do have your work cut out for you!! I agree, there are far too many Fred Wright's in Toronto... oy.

Breaking news...

I found "a" Frederick Wright with approx. correct age, dob etc. at York Cemetery--> link . inventory #4362061. However, I called them and they don't have any other info other than Internment date: April 7th 1975 and dod of Mar 29 1975.

I called Registrar General of Ontario re: getting death  cert (since none available online past /47) and if they could give me anything to at least let me know I was spending money and time on the right guy. They said no. You pay your money, wait exorbitant time (8-12 weeks) and take your chances.

Question to the G2G: is there any other way to ensure this guy is the right guy first? BTW: I also looked into obits in globe and mail---nothing.

thx again all.

George

What about the Toronto Star? Does anyone have a subscription to their archives??
