Anyone related to my Illinois Rodgers/Rogers bunch?

My great x 3 grandfather was Inmon M Rodgers born in Illinois in 1830. His mother was Elizabeth, born in 1800 in Sourth Carolina. I do not know her maiden name. They are in the 1850 Census for Tuscaloosa, District 2 Alabama. I’m trying to figure out who Inman’s father was and who my Grandmother Elizabeth was. I had a DNA test but after much studying the “how to” articles,  I still have no clue how to work the GEDmatch site.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes!  That’s my 3rd Great Grandfather. His name appears as Inmon/ Inman but my Grandpa said they called him Inward and that name Inward was passed down in the Rodgers family for several generations.

I would love to find out who his father was and what my grandmothers maiden name was. ( his parents)

My ancestor James Lafait Rogers was born in Illinois in 1833 to father Cornelius Decatur Rogers, who was born in 1805 in Tennessee.  James' sister was born in Illinois in 1833.  All other children before and after these two children were born in Alabama.  James served the Confederacy during the Civil War before moving his family to Texas immediately after returning from the war.  DNA (and family stories of a Taulbee ancestor) show that the Rogers has a Taulbee ancestor.  The Taulbees were in the same county (Fayette) in Illinois at this time.  I don't know your Inman, but he may be the brother or cousin to my James Rogers

Any J haplogroup Ro(d)gers are very likely to be related to me, and of Scots/Irish descent. Plenty of them emigrated in the 1850s, one branch (Hill Rodgers and his brother (?) John, went via Illinois to Iowa.
Thanks, my Dads Y-67 shows a haplogroup of I-M253. What’s strange is that it’s showing no Rodgers/Rogers as direct male descendants for his test. Lots of 0-2 for Nelson. I’ve tried contacting a couple of those connections by email, but the emails are dead.

I have hit a brick wall and can’t seem to find anything related to the paternal 4th great grandparents before 1850. I am about to spend the day looking into James LaFait Rogers and  his father Cornelius as suggested by Dane Bounds.
Are you in the Roger project on FTDNA? I can't see a Cornelius as an earliest ancestor there.

Can I suggest you join that project, and once you're a member cut and paste the DNA results (or cut and paste this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/rogers.sc.ga.al.tx.nm.ca?iframe=ycolorized into this web page http://www.ydnagroupingapp.com where it says "enter and submit URL"

Click on "see reorganized table" and that will get you everyone in the Project with whom you are likely to share a common ancestor (if any). Even if you don't form a group with anyone, it will tell you a false lead right away
Hi Colin! You and I spoke awhile back through email and you helped me join the Rodgers project. I am ( Lisa).

Yes I am in the Rogers project as I see my Great x3 Inmon Rogers on the list. I went ahead a did as you said above. I copied and pasted the link into the ydna grouping app link where it says enter and submit URL. I am now looking at the reorganized table after clicking that button. I see lots of matched groups. I will study it to see what I can figure out. Not sure I know how to use this but I’m so excited!

Thanks Colin!

Lisa
Okay, Colin. so am I to look at the haplogroups and see who matches me?  I’m sorry!  I’m looking at the table and all the different groups but I don’t understand how to use the reorganized table. I wish I could  comprehend all this but I seem to have a learning block with this dna stuff. My hat is off to all of you who do. You are all truly gifted to be able to understand how it works.
Colin, I’m sorry... I spoke to Curtis.

Lisa
Hi Lisa, if you look for your kit in the reorganised list it will be (perhaps) in a group with others with a common ancestor. Or if not, you know not to expend a lot of effort chasing down impossible matches! No need to apologise for speaking to Curtis - he’s the expert. Just wish he would sort the project into haplogroups - or let me do it!!
Thanks Colin!  I did not see my kit number appear in the reorganized list. I searched two times and that’s depending on weather or not I did what you said to do correctly. (Sad face)!

So now I’m at a dead end again.

Because there are more than 500 members in the project the list is on two pages and your ancestor fell on the second page - I used a different method to grab the whole 800+ members of the project but unfortunately your Y fell into the section:

"Unmatched Kits - Kits in this group probably do not share a common male ancestor in the genealogical time frame with any other kit in the project" section

http://tinypic.com/r/aqo3p/9

Sorry about that!

Well bummer!  I guess the 4th great grandparents were E.T’s from another world and just landed here!  (Smiles)!

Maybe they will at some point show up in a group?
Thank you so much for taking time to do that for me.
Have you joined the I1 haplogroup project on FTDNA? The admins there might be able to help. It may well be you're really a Nelson.

Of course the expensive but "catch-all" option is Big Y which is on sale now for $349 if you've already done Y111 - a bit more if you haven't; the price is in the first column of your FTDNA landing page. The admins will almost certainly advise you do it.

What you get from Big Y depends on how many of your matches have also tested - you can see who has by looking at your Y matches. The admins can look a bit deeper.

If no one else has tested you'll get less out of it until someone else rolls up.
I have not joined. Yes, I bet we are Nelson as I have so many Y matches to that name.

I thought about the other test you mentioned, but at this time I am financially strapped as I am in flight school getting bigger ratings to add to my pilot certificate. I will have to wait on that until a couple of years have passed. Thanks so much for suggesting this. Would it help to join that anyway?  Even without the additional testing?

I wish I had time to study all of this. It is a passion that equals piloting, but being a pilot is paying my bills right now and Ancestry is not. ( smiles).
