On this page, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:DNATests&s=Eaton

It says 'If you have taken a DNA test for genealogyselect it here.'

This page takes to to where I added the DNA results anyway.

What do I do with it?

How does adding my DNA help?

I can see that other people have added their DNA results - I cant see how to join the dots!

Registering your DNA test will let others know that you have tested and maybe look for a potential match. Wikitree does not take DNA data or do matching. The theoretical trail of the DNA from the tester is shown on the branches of the tree. If you see an interesting potential match then you can follow up using your DNA results on your test site.

Thank you, but how do they or I 'look for a potential match'? What indicates that there will be a potential match? I really don't understand what you mean buy a 'theoretical trail of DNA' or how to see it on the branches of a tree. How do I follow up using DNA results on my test site? What do you mean by 'test site'?  Sorry but I have no understanding of what you are trying to say. I really do appreciate your feedback but I'm afraid I need it explained to me in a simpler way.
From your profile I can see that you have tested with AncestryDNA and uploaded your results to gedmatch. These are the sites where you would check to see if you match someone when you see their DNA test noted as being potential biological relatives of your ancestors.
At the moment I am not seeing any other people who have registered tests that show on the profiles for any of the direct line ancestors that you have documented. As more people test and add their information to Wikitree then you will see other tests listed under DNA Connections on the right of the profile. That will indicate potential DNA matches, but you would need to check whether you do have matching DNA with them by looking to see if they match you on Ancestry or gedmatch.
Hi Linda

Thanks, I have 222 DNA matches on Ancestry which is the system I usually use. I guess I cant see matches in Wikitree as I'm finding it difficult to connect my uploads to my tree.

Kind Regards

Sharon

The number 222 which you probably are seeing on your main AncestryDNA page is just the number of your matches which are 4th cousins or closer. You will have many more matches than that, but the others are just a little more distant. If you hit the View All Matches button you will see the full list which will probably run to many thousands. There are 50 matches shown per page.

As I mentioned earlier, Wikitree does not accept uploads of DNA data. You appear to have registered your kit correctly as it shows on your profile and can be seen on the profiles of your ancestors.

Potential DNA relatives will begin to show on profiles for your ancestors when:

  • More people test and register their kits
  • You add or connect to more ancestors and some of them also belong to other people who have tested and registered their DNA.
Thank you. I think my next step is to try and connect my Wikitree to the GEDCOMs I have already uploaded.
You need to process the gedcom. There is no automatic connection of a whole gedcom. The process is to work through gedcompare looking to see whether each person in the gedcom already has a profile on Wikitree or not. When you have reviewed everyone in the file the Add buttons will appear and you can begin to add from your gedcom into Wikitree.
Laura, Thanks for the best answer star.
