Looking for George, Manchester, England

Hi,

I'm trying to trace my paternal grandfather, purely out of curiosity, but have so far drawn blanks.

My father (Peter John Davies) was born 4th November 1934 in Manchester to Mabel Davies (born 27th July 1905). His father is unknown and as both my father and Mabel passed away 20 years ago that avenue of research is closed. There is nothing written in either his diaries or her letters and the birth certificate just says 'father unknown'.

We think his father may have been called George Heywood (Hayward?) but this is from verbal memory so may not be entirely correct. He was apparently married to someone else at the time of my father's birth and voluntarily paid child support until my father was 18.

Mabel had worked for a clothing company (possibly making/selling childrens clothes) and also a sewing machine factory in or around the Ancoats region of Manchester then moved to Wythenshawe. She was also a long-standing member of Saint John's Ambulance.

Any hints or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Danny.
