James Atherton, founder of the Worcester county family of this name, first settled in Dorchester (now Milton), then of Nashaway Plantation by 1653, and was one of the founders of Lancaster formed of the Plantation. A son Joseph of James and Hannah Atherton was born in 18: 2 mo., 1672. (p. 182) [1] (p. 896) [2]

Military
In Sir William Phip's unfortunate attempt upon Quebec in 1690, Benjamin Willard served as lieutenant and of several Lancaster townsmen who are supposed to have accompanied him included Joseph Atherton, Jonathan Fairbank, John Pope, Samuel Wheeler, and Timothy Wheelock. (p. 10 ) [5] (p. 127) [6]
In 1736, his nephew James Atherton of Harvard received the rights of property that he received for his service in Dorchester Canada.[7]
