Biography

Joan Bigod was the daughter of John Bigod, Knt., of Settrington, Yorkshire, and Amy Unknown.[1][2] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

She married in 1401 to Walter Calverley (alias Scott), Knt., second son and heir of John de Calverley (alias Scott) and his wife, Agnes.[1] They had one son:

  • Walter Calverley, born 1402, died before 5 March 1466/7, married first Elizabeth Markenfield and had issue, married second Katherine_____[1]

Walter left a will proved 18 December 1404 and that same month, Joan took a vow of chastity. Joan Bigod died between 1420 and June 1423.[1]

Research Notes

Removed spouse Marmaduke Darrell and son Edmund Darrell as there is no source that Joan married Marmaduke and had a child with him.

Magna Carta Project

Joan (Bigod) Calverly appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Elizabeth Bosvile to Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod (vol. I, pages 261-265 BOSVILE). Portions of this trail need further development by the Project. The trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Godfrey Bosvile's profile.
Joan (Bigod) Calverly may also be in a trail from Gateway Ancestor William Wentworth to Magna Carta Surety Barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod (MCA I:261-262 BOSVILE). The Gateway is said to be a descendant of Thomas Wentworth, who appears in the Richardson-documented trail for Bosvile. This possible trail needs further research and development and is detailed in the Magna Carta Trails section of the profile of William Wentworth, the Gateway's father.

Bigod-111 and Bigod-68 appear to represent the same person because: same daughter of John, one profile has first husband, the other profile has the second husband.
