Biography

Flag of Anglesey
Richard Bulkeley MP was born in Anglesey, Wales.

Sir Richard Bulkeley (ca. 1533-1621) was the oldest son of Sir Richard Bulkeley of Beaumaris and his first wife, Margaret Savage. His brother was Thomas (who died in 1593), also MP for Beaumaris. Richard was educated at Lincoln's Inn, 1558. His first marriage, in 1558, was to Catherine (d.1573), daughter of Sir William Davenport of Bramhall, Cheshire. By this first marriage, they had one son and one daughter. In 1577, he married secondly, Mary, daughter of William Burgh, 4th Baron Burgh of Gainsborough. From this marriage, they had two sons and five daughters. He succeeded his father in 1572.[1]

Research Notes

Birth year: Using a birth of "about 1533," for him, and "before 1524" for his father triggers a WikiTree database error results (father too young). This database error has been marked as false because sources support both dates. Subsequently, upon further analysis, "after 1533" has been adopted, which may or may not trigger an additional error.

History of Parliament Online (HOP) does not report a birth year for him, but his father's HOP biography shows a birth year for him as "by 1524".[3]
Note that 1533 is given in Henderson, Thomas Finlayson's wikisource copy of the article "Bulkeley, Richard (1533-1621)" from Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 07. That article also notes that he was appointed sheriff in 1561.
However, History of Parliament gives his first marriage date as 1558, so "after 1533' is probably closer to the truth.

Additional Documentation on Children: Possibly his children, from a footnote to the White pedigree in Visitations of Wales:

"A settlement prior to the marriage of Harry White, with 'Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley, Kt. deceased,' sister of Richard Bulkeley, Esq. then living, bears date the 6 Jun 1639. She married secondly to ........ Price, and was living on the 6 Aug 1670."[4]
  • Ann, married (1) Harri White, (2) ____ Price
  • Richard (her brother)

In the discussion of the birth year, it says his first marriage was 1548; whereas, History of Parliament (and the data field) states 1558. So it would seem reasonable to calculate a minimum birth year based on this very solid date of 1557or 1558.

(Correction: second marriage was 1576/7.)
