In the records of Cape Elizabeth the birth of Peter Dyer, "son to Christopher and Marcy," is given "April 5, 1778." This is clearly an error, but no attempt can be made at correction unless to suggest that it may have been 1748 or 1758. Peter Dyer and Sarah Simonton were mar. April 28, 1774, in Cape Elizabeth, by Rev. Ephraim Clark. Very little is known of this Peter Dyer or his descendants. He appears to have been the Peter Dyer mentioned in a "List dated Cape Elizabeth, Jan. 17, 1782, of men formerly belonging to Cape Elizabeth, who went out in armed vessels, etc., subsequent to 1776, reported lost in the Civil Usage"(*) -- a privateer.
