Col. William Green Garcelon came to Lewiston in March of 1776. He was active in the town, serving as a town clerk, selectman, and representative to the legislature. He also was a justice of the peace and surveyor in the town. He founded the first Sunday School and the first Temperance Society in the area. He was on the building committee for the Old South Church in 1818. His son, Dr. Alonzo Garcelon, was Governor of Maine in 1879. He wrote a history of Lewiston and a Garcelon Genealogy in 1865. The Androscoggin Historical Society has his diaries covering 26 Apr 1832 - 15 Jul 1834 and 05 Mar 1838 - 08 Jul 1841.
