MILITARY, CIVIL WAR: James M. was a Confederate soldier in the 20th VA Cavalry, captured by the Union 6 November 1863, and sent to the ATHENEUM "Lincoln's Bastille" in Wheeling, WV, then to a prison camp in Cumberland, MD. Then Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, where he took the oath in April 1865 when the war was over, and released. His brother Elmus was also captured, and sent to Clarksburg. Elmus enlisted in the Union Army to get out of prison. James M did not. Their grandmother, Clarissa Fleming Hamilton, died 5 November 1863, the day before James was captured.
