Biography

Disputed Origins

There is no evidence that he was son of John Rice Hughes and Nicati/Nicketti Powhatan. They've been detached. Please discuss origins in attached G2G thread.

Life in Maryland

Matthias Hughes came to Maryland as a servant at some time before 1667. He appears in Gus Skordas' "Early Settlers of Maryland."[1] There is a notation of "service by 1667" indicating that Matthias came to Maryland as a servant, but was eligible for a grant of 50 acres at the end of his term of service.

In 1679 Matthias obtained for "a valuable consideration" 155 acres of land known as Poplar Ridge.[2] This was not the only land he owned as he sold another parcel in 1694, with wife Sarah releasing her dower rights.[3]

According to Find-a-grave his date of death is 21 Jan 1702 (no tombstone shown), but records of St. James Parish state that he was buried in St. James Parish Episcopal Cemetery, Lothian, Anne Arundel Co., MD, on Jan. 28, 1702. [4],[5]

The Maryland Calendar of Wills 1703-1713 abstracts his will, dated 21 Jan 1702:

  • To son Samuel and to son John at majority, "Paw Paw Ridge" equally.
  • To daus. Sarah and Margaret personalty.
  • Sarah Little executrix to have charge of son John during his minority.
  • Test: Thos. Trott, Alex. Caddle, Jno. Beacher.[6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Matthias by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Matthias:

Four children listed in will: Samuel, John, Sarah, & Margaret. Both sons underage. Only two children's profiles. Both have birth date of 1684, only one linked to wife Sarah.

Hughes-12669 and Hughes-3892 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that these two are duplicates. Please consider and merge if deemed appropriate.
