Biography

Birth and early life

Benjamin was born in Martin's River, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia in 1842 or 1843, the son of George Michael Legge and Mary. [1] [2] [3]

At the time of the 1871 census he appears to have been living with his sister Eliza, her brother-in-law Thomas Huntley, and their daughter Clia in Centreville. However, the "Benjimin" listed here gave an age of 26, meaning he was born about 1845. [4]

He was Christened on February 21, 1884, at St. Stephens Anglican Church, Chester, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. [5]

Marriage and children

Anne E. Corkum and Benjamin Legge married in 1872 in Kings County. There is an image of marriage record on NovaScotiaGenealogy.com. [6]

Benjamin is the father of 13 children. Eight girls and four boys lived to adulthood: Benjamin Legge, Bertha Lyons, Cora Lyons, Dora Legge, Effie Legge, Ella Maxwell, Emma C. Legge, Floyd Legge, Harding Legge, Mary Millet, Pearl Lyons, and T. Lee Legge. (Note that three of the girls married men named Lyons. The Lyons family lived in Blomidon, Nova Scotia. Bertha married the father, Noble Lyons, after his first wife died. Cora and Pearl married Noble's sons Ralph and Roy.)

Benjamin and Annie Legge also had a daughter, Emma C. Legge, who was born in 1884 and died in 1886. [7]

Career and later life

Like his father, Benjamin was a farmer. He may have done blacksmith work too. [8]

The 1911 Census of Canada indicates that Benjamin was a farmer and a cooper.

After Anna died in 1904, Effie left school to stay home and take care of him.

In later years, Pearl took care of him. He died at age 92 in 1934.[9]
