Biography

This William Dunbar, son of James Dunbar and Anna Catherina Dunbar, was born on 2 March 1812 and baptised on 21 March 1812 in Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.

He sailed to England from South Africa aboard the "Nerina" on January 21, 1820.

Among many later notable positions he served as a Member of Parliament between 1857 and 1865. He was Keeper of the Privy Seal for the Prince of Wales between 1859 and 1865. Also Keeper of the Great Seal of the Prince for Scotland between 1863 and 1865.

He died on December 18, 1889. He was succeeded by his older son, Uthred James Hay Dunbar, as 8th Baronet of Mochrum. Uthred was succeeded in turn by his younger brother, William Cospatrick Dunbar, as 9th Baronet.
